Joliet Catholic RHP Drake Fellows and Rochester SS Tyler Fitzgerald share a surprising amount of similarities. Most notably, the two prep prospects are attracting plenty of buzz as potential draft selections in the 2016 MLB Draft, which takes place June 9th-11th.
The Elite Baseball Training Academy Class of 2016 grads come into the draft process with their fair share of accolades. Both Fellows and Fitzgerald sit comfortably in Perfect Game’s Class of 2016 Top 100 at 64th and 40th overall, respectively. Fellows was a 2016 Rawlings-Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American, while Fitzgerald was 1st team. Additionally, both Midwest Illinois preps have commitments to College Baseball powerhouses: Fellows to Vanderbilt, Fitzgerald to Louisville.
Drake Fellows is 6-5, 205 lb right handed pitcher known for his high upside and maturity on the mound. Blessed with the proto-typical starting pitcher’s frame, Fellows throws a low-mid 90’s fastball and a slider which has been dubbed “filthy” by Perfect Game (May 30th, 2016).
“I think the most impressive thing in watching Drake develop over the last 4 years is how he’s learned how to pitch” says Justin Stone, Director and CEO of Elite Baseball Training. “There’s a pro mentality of maturity he has on the mound when, on certain days, he may not have his best stuff but he still finds a way to compete and get the job done.”
Tyler Fitzgerald’s name has been popping up in many mock drafts in recent weeks – unsurprising, as it’s hard to see what there is to dislike. Fitzgerald matches a 5-tool skill set at a premium position with outstanding intangibles that coaches rave about. A 6-3, 185 lbs. shortstop with 6.5 speed (courtesy of Perfect Game), Fitzgerald not only stands out physically, but also impresses scouts with his “steadiness and consistency of the game” (PG).
“He has leadership qualities, modesty, work ethic and drive. It takes that combination to make the trek through professional baseball” said Stone. He added “rarely is a player ready mentally to jump into pro ball out of high school. But Tyler could do that if he desires to.”
Tune into the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft this week and watch where these two highly touted prospects land.
